Robert Schumann: Visitation

A triangular relationship of a special kind: At the center of this evening are three of the most important personalities of German (musical) Romanticism: Robert Schumann, his wife Clara and Johannes Brahms.

Robert Schumann, celebrated composer and pioneer of a new musical aesthetic, is haunted by visions in which angels and demons torment him – “truly, a wonderful suffering.” At his side: Clara Schumann, world-renowned pianist, mother of eight children, muse, and successful businesswoman all in one, who not only holds her own in a male-dominated world but also makes history herself.

Into this close-knit network enters the young Johannes Brahms in 1853 – highly gifted, passionate, and full of admiration for Robert, yet also deeply moved by Clara. A relationship develops, full of mutual admiration, affection, and intense tensions, in which friendship, love, and loyalty are conflict-ridden but inextricably intertwined.

The piece traces the fateful development of this extraordinary constellation: from the heights of artistic inspiration to the abyss of human despair. Between acclaimed performances in the concert hall and internment in a mental institution, between passionate letters and heart-rending compositions, a drama unfolds that seems as timeless as the music itself.

An evening – designed by actors from the ensemble, the Straubenhardt concert choir and Miriam Kurrle as soloist – about love and betrayal, about genius and madness, about what is openly expressed in the letters – and what resonates between the lines and notes, unspoken, mournful and comforting at the same time.
