FLUX – between water and stone

Melanie Wiora explores nature and our relationship with it. Her works speak of the power and violence of nature and its continuous change. They make visible what remains hidden to the naked eye.

Melanie Wiora's photographs and videos take us directly into the phenomena of nature. In her photo series "Natura," the viewer's gaze wanders over vast landscapes, macrocosms and microcosms that seem to be frozen between states. The power and change inherent in these primal landscapes are palpable. It remains unclear whether we are dealing with fog, water, rock, or ice, or where the sky begins and the earth ends. In her photo series "Arise," the artist depicts crystalline structures and formations that appear as if from nowhere. The eruptions of mud volcanoes are captured, frozen in mid-motion.

Melanie Wiora's videos from the "Waters" series, mostly depicting volcanic water phenomena, create a choreography of flowing structures and forms. The extreme slow motion allows the immense power of water and its constant transformability to be experienced. In the floor-to-ceiling installations, the viewer can observe the smallest details and changes in natural processes that actually last only a few seconds. They are immersed in a raw yet fascinating natural world. The videos create a visual pull and transport the viewer into an almost meditative state.

Melanie Wiora lives and works in Cologne. She studied painting at the Karlsruhe Art Academy and media art at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (HFG) in Karlsruhe. Numerous awards and scholarships have taken her to London, England, and New York, USA. Most recently, she was awarded a scholarship from VG Bild-Kunst in 2021 and was artist in residence at the Museum Kunst der Westküste on Föhr in 2023.
