BORROMINI

The Song of the Seraphim

The Song of the Seraphim

Francesco Borromini (1599-1667), one of the most influential architects of the Baroque period, was a master of innovation. With his penchant for dynamic forms, boldly curved facades, and ingenious floor plans, he created works that continue to fascinate today. However, the architect's creative zeal was overshadowed by his inner demons and external conflicts. In particular, his rivalry with Bernini, another titan of Baroque art, shaped Borromini's life and work. The tensions between the two geniuses were more than a competition for commissions—they reflected a fundamental contrast in style and character.

Bernini's uncompromising perfectionism contrasted with the easy elegance of the man of the world, which not only spurred the rivals to artistic masterpieces but also led to a human tragedy. The "Song of the Angels" captures this tension and thus concludes the "Angel Project."

In a mixture of narrative, acting, film projection and music, the successful Bernini confronts his dead rival and friend – a moving “conversation with the dead”.

This theater evening uses this debate to pose a timeless question: What effect does art have on us? What are its healing and destructive powers? In the deadly conflict between Romn's two rivals, however, the audience is ultimately confronted with their own contradictions, doubts, and longings.
