Melanie Wiora

FLUX – Between Water and Stone

12.10. – 23.11.2025

Melanie Wiora deals with nature and our relationship to it Her works reveal what remains hidden from view: the tremendous energy of natural forces and their constant transformation.

Wiora's photographs and videos take us directly into the realms of nature. In the photo series "Natura," our gaze sweeps across vast landscapes, immersed in microcosms that seem frozen between states. The power and change inherent in these primal landscapes are immediately tangible. The boundaries between fog, water, rock, or ice, between sky and earth, blur.

In the photo series "Arise," the artist depicts crystalline structures and formations that appear out of nowhere. The eruptions of mud volcanoes appear frozen in mid-motion.

The videos in the "Waters" series, mostly depicting volcanic water phenomena, create a choreography of intertwining structures and forms. The extreme slow motion allows the immense power of water and its constant transformability to be experienced. In floor-to-ceiling installations, the viewer can experience even the smallest details and changes in natural processes that actually last only a few seconds. They are immersed in a raw yet fascinating natural world, carried by a visual pull into an almost meditative state.

Melanie Wiora lives and works in Cologne. She studied painting at the Karlsruhe Art Academy and media art at the Karlsruhe University of Art and Design. Numerous awards and scholarships have taken her to London and New York, among other places. Most recently, she received a scholarship from VG Bild-Kunst in 2021, and in 2023 and 2025 she was artist in residence at the Museum Kunst der Westküste on Föhr.

Dennis Ulbrich, born in 1989 in Pforzheim, is an up-and-coming German artist who, with his powerful and colorful compositions, moves between painting, object and sculpture.

After studying painting and graphics with Prof. Helmut Dorner and Prof. Franz Ackermann at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe, which he completed in 2017 as a master student of Franz Ackermann, Dennis Ulbrich has developed his very own style over time.

His unusual material combinations of wood, Plexiglas, metal, and paper, combined with vibrant acrylic paints, varnishes, and spray techniques, merge into dynamic compositions that are as intense as they are surprising. His enthusiasm for experimentation is also evident in his constant exploration of new ideas. For example, he created everything from a tree bark object for public spaces to graphic works for skateboards. Each material he uses has a meaning and aesthetic potential that are inscribed in his art, and the artist enjoys utilizing its qualities.

Recently, he has been particularly interested in memories, emotions, and the traces humans leave behind in nature—often unconscious, sometimes destructive, but usually full of stories and interconnections. Who is shaping whom here?

The resulting architectures offer new perspectives on structure, depth, and dynamics. They invite us to take a closer look, decipher the stories of the individual parts, and ask ourselves: What are we leaving behind? What impact do our actions have on the environment? How will we interact with nature in the future? How will the relationship between us and our environment be perceived?

Exhibitions such as "The View from Above" at the Nordheimer Scheune in 2019 or the presentation at Art Karlsruhe in 2024 have shown that Ulbrich's works are far more than aesthetically pleasing statements – they challenge, inspire, and remain memorable. His art is part of everyday life, it is sustainable, and it demonstrates responsibility!

Dennis Ulbrich lives and works in Neuenbürg.

A catalogue for the exhibition will be published.
