Mirja Wellmann

rustling chirping splashing – Sculptural transformation of sounds

(Forum for Contemporary Art)

Mirja Wellmann In her work, which thoroughly combines the senses of hearing and sight, she explores the nature of hearing and captures both the means of exploration and what is heard in a plastic-sculptural form. Through hearing, the artist experiences herself in space, experiences space as a three-dimensional structure and her own position as a plastic element within it. In this way, the experience of space becomes an acoustic internalization of space, from which a visual representation of what is heard simultaneously develops. She gives an example of this: a dog barks in the urban canyon of buildings and, through its barking, which reverberates acoustically in the buildings and on the street, makes the nature of this canyon tangible – narrow, tall, wide, broken or evenly staggered buildings. Space as a sculptural component in the sense of concrete sculpture is heard in its nature. In the exhibition, she shows sculptures "Horn Nests" and "Hörwolken" (Audible Clouds) made of wood and woodcut works on canvas and paper.
