Greetings from the climatic health resort – Neuenbürg Castle and town on historic postcards

Greetings are popular – those who are traveling, on vacation or simply on the go prefer to send their messages via so-called messenger services.

In the 21st century, digitalization enables new forms of message exchange; 150 years ago, it was the postcard that revolutionized our everyday communication.

The exhibition Greetings from the climatic health resort – Neuenbürg Castle and town on historic postcards With over 120 exhibits, the focus is on historical views and greeting cards as well as nationally significant contemporary documents.

When the correspondence card, as the postcard was also called, came onto the German market in 1870, it soon became a mass medium: A postcard was affordable and also quick to send, because the limited text field on the back offered even those who were inexperienced in formulating messages the opportunity to write them in a concise manner.

Until the end of the 19th century, the writer left his short message on the back. Soon, colorful images adorned the text area. Elaborately designed cards, such as embossed or multi-image cards, were very popular; several examples of these can be seen in the exhibition.

In 1905, the postcard was redesigned and adopted its current form: The front was divided into an address field on the right and a text field on the left. The back was now free for artistic illustrations or photographs of all kinds.

Cityscapes, sights, landscapes, excursion destinations, but also themes such as eroticism, politics, or humor dominated the motifs of picture postcards. Among the most popular postcards of the time were probably the "Greetings from" cards.

Since the end of the 20th century, postcards have been increasingly losing popularity in Germany.

Old corners rediscovered!

Where was the iron factory? Who ran the scythe factory? Where could people shop? Which inn once stood here?

The diverse postcards of Neuenbürg Town and Castle from the early period from 1896 to the 1970s show views of the town of Neuenbürg, of residential and commercial buildings, of the many inns that once existed, with or without people, of streets and towns that no longer exist today or have been significantly altered. The castle itself was once inhabited and has changed its appearance over the centuries.

The exhibits, some of which are elaborately designed, not only depict, but also tell us vivid stories – stories about the flourishing life in a small town in the Northern Black Forest and also about ongoing changes in the cityscape.

Certainly, some residents of Neuenbürg will remember buildings in the old town and their uses. The exhibition now offers a rare opportunity to use the greeting cards to tell younger generations what it was like in the past.

The originals come from the archives of Neuenbürg Castle and the town as well as from private lenders.
