ANGEL

Angels are omnipresent, past and present, here and everywhere, and not just in Christian culture. Their powers are as incomprehensible as they are effective. The desire to personify the inexplicable has created images in people's imaginations. Human-shaped, flying messengers between heaven and earth have populated heaven – and hell – for millennia. Human imagination knows no bounds in its depiction of these beloved, invisible, yet tangible spiritual beings. Maud Pohlmeyer's collection, which was transferred to the Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe in 2004, contains a multitude of different angel figurines from five continents. Andreas Seim, a folklorist at the Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe, has studied the beautifully crafted angels made of clay, metal, wood, fabric, and other materials and has gathered a wealth of interesting information about the production of these small works of art and, in turn, about the mentality in various cultures.

Special exhibition from 17 November 2013 to 6 January 2014
