From Lummerland to the Black Forest

Neuenbürg Castle opens Augsburger Puppenkiste

Who doesn't know the locomotive driver Lukas and his friend Jim Knopf from the small island of Lummerland? Or Urmel from the Ice, who lives on the South Sea island of Titiwu with his talking pet pig "Wutz"? These characters are just a few of the numerous stars who rose to national fame with the puppet theater, founded in Augsburg in 1948 by Walter and Rose Oehmichen. Since its first broadcast on television in 1953, the "Augsburger Puppenkiste" has become an integral part of our living rooms. Based on literary works by well-known children's authors such as Michael Ende, Max Kruse, and Otfried Preußler, generations of children continue to experience adventurous stories, including the one about the rough-and-tumble robber Hotzenplotz. The repertoire also includes fairy tales such as "The Cold Heart," operas, and original plays by the Augsburg theater ensemble, lovingly staged with the artfully carved puppet figures.

From April 9 to November 12, 2017, the famous puppet theaters will open in the special exhibition rooms of Neuenbürg Castle. A puppet-making workshop, the original island of Lummerland with the steam locomotive Emma, film clips, and puppets from the original premiere of "Puss in Boots" are among the highlights of the family exhibition. The presentation will be complemented by figures from "The Cold Heart," "The Frog Prince," productions for adults, and original illustrations of Jim Button and Urmel from the Ice. (JM)
